Rumor Mill: Xbox’s “Project Positron” Disc-to-Digital Feature Could Drop Next Week

Microsoft is reportedly on the verge of launching its highly anticipated disc-to-digital conversion system—internally codenamed “Project Positron”—and speculation suggests it could arrive as early as next week.

The Tease: Why Next Week?

The rumors caught fire when the usual Xbox Insider program update completely missed its scheduled window. This was a significant break in routine, especially given Xbox CEO Asha Sharma’s recent commitment to a strict two-week update cadence.

However, Xbox Insider head Brad Rossetti took to social media to reassure fans, teasing that the delay would be “worth the wait.” Adding fuel to the fire, Windows Central journalist Jez Corden replied with a massive hint:

“Positron commeth.”

How Project Positron Works

If the reports hold true, Project Positron will bridge the gap between physical media and digital convenience. Here is how the conversion process will reportedly function:

• The Conversion: Players simply insert an eligible physical disc into their console to receive a digital entitlement tied directly to their Microsoft account.

• Digital Perks: Once converted, the game behaves exactly like a natively purchased digital title. This means full access to Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere.

• Eligible Consoles: The system will exclusively support Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs.

• The Limitation: Unfortunately, retro fans are out of luck for now—Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles are not eligible for the program.

What About the Used Game Market?

One of the biggest questions surrounding disc-to-digital conversion has been how it impacts second-hand game sales. According to MP1st, Microsoft has engineered a smart solution to preserve the used game market: the digital license is not permanent if the physical disc changes hands.

If you sell, trade, or lend your converted disc to a friend, and they activate it on a different Microsoft account, the digital license is automatically revoked from your account and transferred to theirs. You get the convenience of a digital library, but the physical disc remains the master key to the game’s ownership.
